Activities & Achievements of CAIDS


Cancer Aid Society (CAIDS), Lucknow, India, organized Symposium on “ WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control” on 31st May, 2011, at Chattrapati Sahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU),formerly known as KG’s Medical College, to mark the ‘World No Tobacco Day’. On this occasion the CAIDS president, Dr. D. P. Gupta, during his presidential address gave a brief account of the activities and achievement of CAIDS. Excerpts of his speech are given below.

“Our Society is working for Cancer Control on WHO guidelines without any Govt. Aid for last about 24 years taking into account the various aspects of Cancer Control like awareness, anti tobacco campaign etc. WHO also says school children can play effective role in cancer control. Therefore, we at Cancer Aid Society made our army of school children for cancer control, who should know every thing about health and hygiene and let others know about all this. Our methodology has successfully demonstrated, power of Public Private Participation (PPP) in Health Awareness and Education leading to notable success and are leaping forward each year in the crusade of Cancer Control. Cancer Aid Society has the credit of being the only ISO 9001:2008 Accredited Social Organisation working at National Level engaged in Mass Awareness Campaigns on Health Education and Cancer Awareness Programs in schools and colleges across the country educating the children, teachers and the Masses on Healthy living habits, Personal and Genital Hygiene. Good dietary habits, regular exercise, abuses of tobacco including active and passive smoking and early symptoms of Cancer.  

Ø  Set up Cancer Awareness stalls on behalf of the Govt. in the health Mela’s organized by the Govt. at various places.

Ø  Printing and distribution of Cancer awareness and tobacco control related material amongst the masses throughout the country.

Ø  Special camps focusing on breast and cervix cancers which account for 2/3rd of all cancers in females.

Ø  Special camps focusing on oral cancer which accounts for 40% of all cancers in Males.

Ø  Besides that Cancer Aid Society has also giving monthly financial assistance towards Palliative Care given to over 2000 patients.

Ø  Cancer Aid Society has organized workshops at SGPGIMS Lucknow, CSMMU Lucknow, GSVM medical College Kanpur, SN Medical College Agra, LLRM Meerut, RLB Medical College Jhansi, BRD Medical College Gorakhpur, Cancer Institute Adyar Chennai under its integrated plan to address the issue of Palliative Care through Cancer Pain Management vis a vis  oral morphine, starting from the state of Uttar Pradesh the most populous State, more workshops are to be organized for training of the Doctors in the Govt. Medical Colleges followed by liaison for the availability of Oral Morphine in neighboring states.

Ø  Several activities related with issues on Cancer, Health and Tobacco are organized each year such as training, conferences, symposia, rallies, awareness cum detection camps and other activities on the various occasions including “World Cancer Day” on February 4th , “World No Tobacco Day” on 31st May and “Cancer Awareness Day” on 7th November each year.

Ø  Regular sponsor of prizes and certificates for the annual cultural activities at Armed Forces Medical College Pune in 2008, 2009, 2010.

Ø  We had organized several rallies and campaigns demanding ban of smoking and sale of tobacco products near educational institutions much before 2004 which were one of the contributory factors towards the promulgation of COTPA 2004 by Govt. of India. We had organized a series of Workshops at State Govt. Medical Colleges of UP for addressing Palliative Care and availability of Oral Morphine for the Cancer Pain Management in the State of UP which has 3% of Global population. Dramatic results were obtained by changing mindsets of the Govt. Officials and the Medical Fraternity leading to the award of organizing the International Conference of Indian Association of Palliative Care in 2011 at Lucknow. We organized International Conference of Palliative Care on Feb 2011 at SGPGIMS where delegates from National and International level participated.

Our Society shall be continuing these activities in future also for the benefit of mankind”.
